Steel sheet piles combined with thyssenkrupp stop log system

Extreme weather is just one of several factors that can lead to flooding. Further factors are intensive agricultural usage and increasing soil sealing in the towns and villages along the tributaries. Such factors mean that less water percolates into the subsoil.

In addition, many dykes have been built very close to the river, which means that it is no longer possible for the water to drain away into the original flood plains.

River training works along the Elbe encourage economic developments in the region and also preserve the ecological value of the river landscape. However, such works also mean that the protective measures must be modernised and enhanced for areas and settlements near the river that are at risk of flooding.

Flood protection as landscaping.

The village of Gallin has been given a “facelift”. The measures include improving the stability of the existing flood protection facilities over a total length of some 9 kilometers, the complete renewal of the sluice gates and the construction of dyke defence access routes on the land side.

In the course of the refurbishment works, an opening in the dyke has been created at the village of Iserbegka. This opening consists of sheet pile sidewalls, a sheet pile retention wall and reinforced concrete ground beams. thyssenkrupp Infrastructure supplied lightweight sections for the foundation to the dyke extension.

In the case of flooding, a demountable thyssenkrupp 2 aluminium stop log system is erected on the reinforced concrete beams atop the dykes. This creates an additional protective height of 1 meters over a length of 80 meters.

Dyke defence access routes have been constructed over a length of 6 kilometers, new dyke sluices and three dyke openings completed.
